How to become a taxi driver in Denmark: requirements, course and chaufførkort (2026)

By Clever Recruiting editorial team · Published 19 October 2026 · Updated 19 October 2026 · 6 min read

In short

To drive a taxi in Denmark you need a chaufførkort, the driver card issued by Færdselsstyrelsen. To get one you must be at least 21 by the practical test, have held a category B licence for at least three years, document Danish at the level of Prøve i Dansk 2, pass a two-week approved course with a theory test and a practical test, and meet the health and conduct requirements. The card is normally valid for five years.

Many taxi companies in Denmark take on drivers who are new to the trade. What stops most applicants is rarely the driving. It is the paperwork: which card, which course and which documents, and in which order. This guide goes through the requirements published by Færdselsstyrelsen, the Danish Road Traffic Authority, and what they mean in practice.

What you need, at a glance

Requirement What it means
Age At least 21 when you take the practical test
Driving licence Category B, held for at least three years
Danish Documented at the level of Prøve i Dansk 2 before you can start the course
Course A two-week course approved by Færdselsstyrelsen, ending with a theory test and a practical test, passed within the last ten years
Health A health check by your own doctor, including vision and hearing, on the current medical certificate
Conduct Færdselsstyrelsen obtains your criminal record and assesses each case individually
The card A chaufførkort issued by Færdselsstyrelsen, normally valid for five years

The same card is required to drive a taxi, a limousine or patient transport.

Start with the Danish requirement

This is the requirement most people find out about too late. To be admitted to an approved course you must document Danish at least at the level of Prøve i Dansk 2. You can do that with a certificate from a recognised exam or education, for example the Danish exam at the end of 9th or 10th grade in the Danish school system, or by taking Prøve i Dansk 2 itself. Færdselsstyrelsen grants exemptions only in very special cases, after a conversation with the applicant.

In practice, taxi driving is not an English-only job in Denmark. If you are still learning Danish, a delivery route on a regular B licence is a common way to start earning while you work towards the test. See delivery and van routes.

Step by step

  1. Check the basics. Your age, how long you have held your B licence, your Danish documentation and your record. If anything is missing, sort it out before you pay for a course.
  2. Book an approved course. The course lasts two weeks and ends with a theory test and a practical test. The course provider creates your application for the card in Færdselsstyrelsen's digital system and reports your test result.
  3. Get the health check. Your own doctor fills in the medical certificate for professional passenger transport, which covers vision, hearing and conditions that can affect safe driving. Færdselsstyrelsen prefers the digital certificate, and certificates on the old form are rejected.
  4. Complete the application. Log in with MitID and find the application under "mine ansøgninger". Give consent for Færdselsstyrelsen to obtain your criminal record and health information, upload a passport-style photo (selfies are not accepted) and submit. The application has to be completed on a computer, not on a phone or tablet.
  5. Foreign records, if you have lived abroad. You must ask the police in the countries where you have lived to send an original criminal record certificate to Færdselsstyrelsen yourself.
  6. Wait for the card. Færdselsstyrelsen invoices the fee once the application is approved, and the card is posted to you after payment.
  7. Find a taxi company. With the card you can start. Companies differ a lot in shifts, base and pay model, so compare before you sign.

What it costs

There is no single price, but budget for these items:

  • The course and its tests. Course providers set their own prices. Ask for the total, including the tests and any re-test.
  • The medical certificate. Your doctor charges for filling it in.
  • The card fee. Færdselsstyrelsen invoices a fee when your application is approved. Check the current amount on fstyr.dk.
  • Prøve i Dansk 2, if you do not already have documentation for your Danish.

How long it takes

The course itself takes two weeks. Processing at Færdselsstyrelsen is usually the longer part. In May 2023 the agency reported around 69 days for new applications when all information was in place, and longer when the medical certificate or the criminal record needed more information. Processing times change, so check the current situation before you plan a start date.

Keeping the card

A chaufførkort is normally valid for five years. If your health requires it, the card can be issued for a shorter period or with conditions, such as wearing glasses.

You can apply for renewal at the earliest six months before the card expires, through Færdselsstyrelsen's digital form. You need MitID, a copy of your driving licence (front and back), a passport-style photo and a medical certificate that is no more than three months old. Færdselsstyrelsen recommends applying about three months before the card expires.

What the work looks like

Most new drivers start with city work, where trips are short and dispatch keeps the car busy in the evenings and at weekends. Others drive pre-booked airport and station transfers, regular business accounts, or municipal flex and patient transport on fixed weekly schedules. See the kinds of taxi work we place people in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a taxi in Denmark if I only speak English?

Not as a rule. Admission to the approved taxi course requires Danish at the level of Prøve i Dansk 2, and Færdselsstyrelsen grants exemptions only in very special cases. How old do I have to be to drive a taxi in Denmark?

You must be at least 21 years old at the latest when you take the practical test at the end of the course, and you must have held a category B driving licence for at least three years.

How long does the taxi course take?

The approved qualification course lasts two weeks and ends with a theory test and a practical test. When you apply for the card, the course must have been passed within the last ten years.

How long is a chaufførkort valid?

A chaufførkort is normally valid for five years. If your health requires it, Færdselsstyrelsen can issue it for a shorter period or with conditions such as wearing glasses. You can apply for renewal at the earliest six months before it expires.

Yes. The same chaufførkort is required to drive a taxi, a limousine or patient transport (sygetransport) in Denmark.

How long does it take to get the card?

Plan for several weeks after you submit the application. In May 2023 Færdselsstyrelsen reported around 69 days for new applications, and cases take longer when the medical certificate or criminal record needs more information.
